Young Adult Carers

Who is a Young Adult Carer?

Young Adult Carers are between the ages of 18yrs - 25yrs, and look after a relative or friend, of any age, due to disability, chronic/terminal illness, mental health problem or an alcohol or drug addiction/dependency.

What issues do they face?

  • Not having much free time - leisure and recreational opportunities are limited
  • Struggling with college/university studies due to caring role
  • Unable to get work opportunities such as training, more hours/responsibility
  • Greater caring responsibilities at home
  • Stress and anxiety issues

What do we do?

  • The Young Adult Carers Group is a pilot scheme with a view to future funding, which enables carers of a similar age to meet on a regular basis.
  • Raise awareness of young adult carers and their needs.
  • Offer information and support during our meetings.
  • Signpost to our locality service for further emotional support.
  • Provide outings and respite opportunities to tackle the issues of isolation and social exclusion which can be faced by young adult carers.
  • Help with the transition from Young Carer to Adult Carer status.
  • Provide a regular newsletter containing information relevant to Young Adult Carers needs.
