Assessment
Assessments are designed to determine if carers are eligible for support and if so to identify what support is needed by the carer. The assessment will also see if those needs can be met by social or other services. Under the terms of the Carers Equal Opportunities Act 2004 Social Services Departments have a duty to inform carers of their right to assessment. The assessment is carried out to help carers to care and also to assist them in continuing at work or look at learning and leisure opportunities.

Carers Health
It is important that Carers look after their own health. A Carers' lifestyle is frequently restricted and many Carers become mentally and physically exhausted by their caring role. This can cause the Carers’ health to break down.
Every year significant numbers of Carers are forced to stop caring because of illness or injury. Much of this can be prevented, by providing Carers with information and support.

Carers Rights
This section examines Carers’ rights, in particular the:
Right to have their views taken into account by social services when they are considering how best to make provision for the cared for.
Right to have a separate “carers assessment” for those giving “substantial” amounts of care
Rights are now laid down in the following Acts of Parliament:
Carers (Recognition and Services) Act 1995 – introduces core statutory responsibilities and the concept of carers assessment.
Carers and Disabled Children Act 2000 – extends carers’ rights to support services (e.g. through Direct payments.
Carers (Equal Opportunities) Act 2004 – extends the obligations in relation to assessment. Social Services have to inform Carers of their rights and undertake a carers’ assessment taking into consideration whether carers work or wish to and also their education, training or leisure needs.

Respite Care
Informal caring can be a very demanding “round the clock” activity. Carers therefore need a break from their caring duties, while also often giving the cared for a change of scene.
